Despite a commanding batting performance from openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, Punjab Kings (PBKS) were denied a well-earned victory as rain forced a washout against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata. PBKS posted a strong total of 201 for 4 on a sluggish surface, only for a thunderstorm to abandon the match after just one over of KKR’s reply. With the result, both teams shared a point each — PBKS moved to fourth place in the points table, while KKR climbed to seventh with seven points from nine matches.
The match was shaping up to be a one-sided affair after PBKS' openers dominated a challenging pitch. Arya and Prabhsimran put together a 120-run opening stand — PBKS’ first century partnership of the season — showcasing a blend of patience and precision. Arya scored 69 off just 35 balls, preferring timing over power, while Prabhsimran shifted gears brilliantly after a slow start to score 83 off 49.
Prabhsimran’s innings featured a standout moment — an audacious switch-hit six off Sunil Narine that turned his innings around. That over from Narine went for 22 runs, his most expensive in T20 cricket. Prabhsimran, who was on 34 off 32 at one stage, exploded in the latter part of his innings, scoring 49 off his final 17 deliveries.
The duo’s smart approach to a slow, gripping surface saw PBKS extract 74 runs from eight overs of spin, largely neutralizing KKR’s main weapons, Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. While Arya targeted pace — scoring 50 runs off just 20 balls from seamers — Prabhsimran attacked the spin, taking 41 off 22 balls from the tweakers.
Despite a sluggish finish in the last six overs, which yielded only 42 runs, PBKS believed they had posted an above-par score. The pitch continued to offer grip even in the final overs, where Andre Russell generated reverse swing, and Arora’s slower deliveries proved hard to score off.
However, rain had the final say. KKR were 7 for 0 after one over when the skies opened, leaving both sides frustrated — especially PBKS, who looked poised for an important win in the playoff race.
With time running out in the league phase, every point is crucial. For PBKS, the washout was a missed opportunity, while KKR have more work to do to keep their qualification hopes alive.
