Sultana Century, Spin Twins Shine as Bangladesh Crush Thailand in Record ODI Win

Bangladesh produced a clinical all-round performance to thrash Thailand by 178 runs in their Women’s World Cup Qualifier on Thursday, registering their biggest victory in One-Day Internationals in terms of runs.

Captain Nigar Sultana led from the front with a blistering maiden ODI century, scoring 101 off 78 balls, as Bangladesh piled on 271 for 3 – their highest-ever total in the format. She shared a 152-run third-wicket partnership with Sharmin Akhter, who remained unbeaten on 94 and narrowly missed out on her own hundred. The pair built on a solid platform laid by Fargana Hoque (53), with Bangladesh accelerating sharply in the final ten overs to collect 77 runs.

Thailand briefly enjoyed early success when Ishma Tanjim fell in the fourth over, but their bowlers struggled for control thereafter. Sultana’s aggressive strokeplay and Akhter’s anchor role dismantled the Thai attack, with four bowlers conceding over six runs an over.

In reply, Thailand were blown away for just 93 runs in under 29 overs – their lowest ODI total – as Bangladesh’s spin duo of Fahima Khatun and Jannatul Ferdus shared all ten wickets.

Fahima, playing her 45th ODI, recorded her first five-wicket haul with figures of 5 for 21, while debutant Ferdus made a stunning impact with 5 for 7, including a double-wicket maiden in her first over. The 21-year-old offspinner needed just five overs to claim her five-for, cleaning up Thailand’s middle and lower order with ruthless efficiency.

Thailand started cautiously, reaching 38 without loss before Fahima triggered the collapse by dismissing Chanida Sutthiruang with her first delivery. Ferdus then tore through the batting with pinpoint offspin, claiming three wickets before conceding a run and wrapping up her haul with a sharp return catch off her own bowling.

Only Sutthiruang (22) offered brief resistance as wickets tumbled in quick succession. Bangladesh’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure, allowing no opportunity for a counterattack.

With all six teams having played one match each in the tournament, Bangladesh’s massive margin of victory gave them a significant net run-rate boost, taking them to the top of the points table. The top two teams in the Qualifier will secure a place in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup to be held in India later this year.
