Sanju Samson Fined INR 24 Lakh for RR's Second Over-Rate Offence in IPL 2025

Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson has been fined INR 24 lakh for his team's second over-rate offence in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. The offence occurred during RR's match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

According to Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, a second over-rate offence by a team results in a fine of INR 24 lakh for the captain. The remaining members of the playing XII, including the Impact Player, are each fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee—whichever is lesser. Notably, the IPL has removed match suspensions for captains even in the case of a third offence this season.

This marks RR's second over-rate offence of the tournament. The first occurred in a game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last month, when Riyan Parag led the team in Sanju Samson's absence due to a finger injury. Parag, acting as stand-in captain, was fined INR 24 lakh at the time.

The latest offence came during RR’s third loss of the season in five matches, following two consecutive wins. The team currently sits at seventh place on the IPL 2025 points table.

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer has questioned the quality and depth of the Royals’ squad following the 2025 IPL auction, adding pressure to a team already struggling to find consistency.
