Roston Chase Becomes First Batter to Be Retired Out in T20I Between Full Member Sides

In a historic moment during the third T20I between West Indies and Pakistan, Roston Chase became the first batter to be retired out in a men's T20I featuring two Full Member teams. The tactical move came during West Indies' chase of 190 in the series decider at Lauderhill on Sunday.

Chase was struggling to accelerate, scoring 15 off 12 balls, with just two boundaries, as the required rate continued to climb. With 41 runs needed from 18 balls, the West Indies opted for a bold strategy and called Chase back to the dugout, aiming to send in a more explosive batter in search of a late-overs surge.

However, the plan fell short as West Indies managed just 27 more runs, losing the match by 13 runs and conceding the series 2-1 to Pakistan.

A Rare Occurrence in T20I Cricket

This is only the 12th recorded instance of a batter being retired out in men’s T20 Internationals, and just the second time involving a Full Member team. The previous such case came during the 2024 T20 World Cup, when Namibia’s Nikolaas Davin retired out after scoring 18 off 16 balls in a rain-shortened chase against England.

All other instances of tactical retire-outs have occurred in matches featuring two Associate teams, making Chase’s case the first of its kind at the highest level of international T20 competition.

Not Chase’s First Tactical Retire-Out

Interestingly, this is not the first time Chase has been retired out in T20 cricket. Earlier this year, during the ILT20 while playing for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, Chase was retired out after scoring 20 off 13 balls in the 18th over, again after failing to accelerate in the death overs.

That decision also came in the pursuit of a stronger finish to the innings—a recurring theme in Chase's T20 career, where his role as a stabilizer has occasionally clashed with the demands of power-hitting in the late overs.

A Bold Call in a High-Stakes Game

The tactical decision to retire Chase out underlines a growing trend in modern T20 cricket, where teams are increasingly willing to make unconventional calls to optimise scoring opportunities. However, the move failed to swing the game in West Indies' favour this time, as Pakistan held their nerve to seal the win and the series.

Match Summary:

  • Pakistan: 189/4 (Farhan 74, Ayub 66)

  • West Indies: 176/6 (Athanaze 60, Rutherford 51)

  • Result: Pakistan won by 13 runs

  • Series: Pakistan won 2-1
