Rajat Patidar Fined INR 12 Lakh for Slow Over-Rate in RCB's Win Over MI

Rajat Patidar, the captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has been fined INR 12 lakh for his team's slow over-rate during their victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on Monday night. This fine marks RCB's first slow-over-rate offence of the IPL 2025 season.

Patidar, who has been in fine form with the bat, is currently RCB's second-highest run-scorer with 161 runs from four innings, just behind Virat Kohli's 164 runs in the same number of innings. His aggressive leadership style and impact on RCB's batting have been praised, particularly in his first season as captain.

Patidar’s captaincy has also garnered positive reviews. After the win over MI, former cricketer Ambati Rayudu lauded the strategic reintroduction of experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar at a critical juncture in Mumbai's chase, calling it "a brilliant move" during his appearance on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show.

Commenting on Patidar's captaincy, RCB’s batting coach Sanjay Bangar highlighted Patidar's tactical acumen. He specifically noted the decision to hold back Krunal Pandya for the 20th over, a move that made sense considering the circumstances. "You don’t want him bowling the 19th over with Josh Hazlewood having only 10 or 12 runs to defend," Bangar said, praising the captain’s smart rotation of bowlers.

Rayudu further noted that Patidar appeared "at ease in pressure situations," mentioning that Virat Kohli did not have to offer his usual on-field suggestions to Patidar during tense moments, indicating the captain's growing confidence and maturity.

RCB, who have won three of their six matches so far in IPL 2025, will next face Delhi Capitals (DC) in Bengaluru on Thursday evening.

Before Patidar, several other IPL captains had been fined for slow over-rates earlier in the season. Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians (MI), Riyan Parag of Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Rishabh Pant of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) had all been fined for similar offences in earlier matches.

As RCB continues its campaign, Patidar’s leadership will be in focus, especially as the team aims to improve its over-rate efficiency while maintaining its strong performance on the field.
