Peshawar Zalmi Crush Multan Sultans by Record Margin to Register First Win in PSL 2025

Peshawar Zalmi finally got their Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 campaign underway with a thunderous statement, dismantling Multan Sultans by a record margin of 120 runs — the biggest win by runs in PSL history.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Zalmi skipper Babar Azam’s decision looked dicey early on. Both openers, Babar and Saim Ayub, fell cheaply, leaving the side reeling at 5 for 2 within the first 2.1 overs. But what followed was an extraordinary counter-attack led by Mohammad Haris and Tom Kohler-Cadmore that turned the tide completely in Zalmi’s favor.

The duo added 79 quick runs for the third wicket, with Kohler-Cadmore scoring a fluent 52 off 30 balls and Haris hammering 45 off just 21 deliveries. Their blitz provided the perfect platform for the middle and lower order to take over, and they delivered emphatically.

Hussain Talat (37 off 29), Mitchell Owen (34 off 15), and Abdul Samad (40 off 14) continued the carnage, attacking relentlessly and ensuring there was no let-up in scoring. Samad, in particular, was sensational, striking at a staggering rate of 285.71, providing the late flourish that pushed Zalmi to an imposing total.

Multan Sultans' bowlers had a day to forget. Akif Javed leaked 52 runs in his four overs, including 24 in the 18th over alone. Usama Mir was also expensive, giving away 51 runs, while Michael Bracewell was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 37.

In response, Sultans never got going. Despite a powerful slog sweep for six by Mohammad Rizwan early in the chase, he departed in the fourth over, outfoxed by a clever legbreak from part-timer Saim Ayub. The wickets kept tumbling thereafter, with Shai Hope, Usman Khan, and others failing to withstand the mounting scoreboard pressure.

The highlight of the evening came from 17-year-old pace sensation Ali Raza, who ripped through the Sultans’ middle order with a fiery spell of fast bowling. Clocking speeds in the high 140s, Raza claimed the key scalps of Kamran Ghulam, Michael Bracewell, Ashton Turner, and Iftikhar Ahmed.

His dismissal of Turner — a delivery that jagged back sharply and sent the stumps flying — stood out as a reminder of his immense potential. Ali Raza, who made waves during the T20 World Cup last year and was dubbed a "superstar in the making" by Ian Bishop, reinforced his growing reputation with a brilliant all-round bowling display.

Multan Sultans were eventually bundled out well short of the target, crashing to their third straight defeat of the tournament, while Zalmi celebrated a commanding win that could very well ignite their campaign
