Hameed’s Marathon Century Puts Nottinghamshire on Brink as Warwickshire Hope for Rain

Haseeb Hameed delivered a masterclass in patience and perseverance at Edgbaston, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 138 to leave Nottinghamshire on the cusp of victory over Warwickshire in the LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two clash. However, with heavy rain forecast for Monday, the final day may yet deny Nottinghamshire the win they richly deserve.

Trailing by a hefty 274 runs on the first innings, Warwickshire ended Day 3 on 163 for 6 — still 111 behind — with only four second-innings wickets in hand. Their best hope now lies with the weather, as rain threatens to wash out Nottinghamshire’s dominant position on the final day.

Hameed Carries His Bat

Resuming on 204 for 5, Nottinghamshire were already in control, but chose to bat deep into the third day. Hameed, unflappable and determined, ground his way to 138 not out from 399 minutes at the crease. It marked just the second time in his career that he has carried his bat through an innings, and he became only the third Nottinghamshire batter to do so against Warwickshire — joining the likes of Mick Newell and Alex Hales.

He received support from Lyndon James (42) and Fergus O’Neill, whose quickfire 50 added a spark to the otherwise slow morning session. O'Neill’s half-century followed a five-wicket haul on the previous day, completing a superb all-round performance.

Michael Booth claimed a well-deserved five-for — his maiden in first-class cricket — finishing with figures of 5 for 90. However, Nottinghamshire’s conservative approach on the third morning may come back to haunt them, as it left them with less time to bowl Warwickshire out again, especially with rain looming.

Warwickshire’s Stubborn Resistance

Facing a mountainous task, Warwickshire lost Alex Davies early to Brett Hutton, and were repeatedly pegged back by disciplined Nottinghamshire bowling. Tongue and O’Neill struck crucial blows either side of tea to remove Rob Yates and Sam Hain, while Hamza Shaikh and Dan Mousley tried to hold firm with dogged resistance.

Shaikh (27) and Mousley (32) both defied the attack for nearly two hours each, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Farhan Ahmed picked up the first spin wicket of the match, trapping Mousley lbw, before O’Neill returned to bowl Kai Smith with a late swinging delivery that pierced his defences.

With only four wickets in hand and rain clouds gathering, Warwickshire's survival now hinges on either a heroic lower-order effort or generous assistance from the weather.

Match Summary:
Nottinghamshire – 367 (Hameed 138*, O’Neill 50, Booth 5-90)
Warwickshire – 93 & 163/6 (Barnard 35*, O’Neill 2-32, Tongue 2-42)
Warwickshire trail by 111 runs with 4 wickets remaining

Day 4 Outlook: Warwickshire will need resistance and rain in equal measure to escape with a draw.
