Nicola Carey’s promotion in the batting order and Heather Graham’s key bowling helped the Hobart Hurricanes secure a 31-run victory over the Sydney Thunder in their WBBL opener at Ninja Stadium.
Carey was the standout performer, scoring 52 runs off 38 balls, including seven boundaries, while batting at No. 3. "I've had a few different roles with the bat over the last few years. It's nice to get a bit more time out in the middle," she said. Surprised by the decision to bat her higher up, she noted, "I'm not someone who is going to clear the rope, so it might look a little bit different."
In addition to her batting, Carey also contributed with the ball, dismissing Thunder’s second-highest scorer Anika Learoyd for 29. Learoyd had formed a 52-run partnership with captain Phoebe Litchfield, who scored 51 and looked set to guide the Thunder to victory. However, Litchfield was stumped by Lizelle Lee off Graham in the 14th over, which shifted momentum.
Carey helped stabilize the innings after Lee’s early dismissal in the second over. She shone during the power surge, hitting four boundaries to lift the Hurricanes to 92 for 2. However, her exit triggered a collapse of 4 wickets for just 12 runs, as Samantha Bates and Chamari Athapaththu tightened the screws.
The Thunder’s chase started poorly, with Molly Strano trapping Athapaththu lbw on the very first ball.
The Thunder will have an opportunity for revenge when they face the Hurricanes again on Thursday night at North Sydney Oval.
